I can relate to this. I was born 366 days (I think my count is right) too late to have been born on “leap year day.”

Actually, he missed by only 730 days. Two consecutive February 29 dates are 1,461 days apart. If he misses one by 731 days, he misses the other by only 730 days. By convention, he would be considered to have missed by the lesser of these two figures; hence, only 730 days.

What is the reference “One tenth of a Rip Van Winkle whisker”, about?

Ah, but now we know he was born halfway between leap years, which likewise only happens every 4 years.

Feb 28th, 1970 would make him 42 tomorrow. Possible, but I get the impression he’s younger than that.

1990 would make him only 22. Nah.

    So….. is he turning 38, 34, or 30? Not 26, surely.

My guess would be 1974, i.e. 38 tomorrow.

Anybody else who enjoys meanlingless conjecture?

Varnes…. hmmmm….. well, Rip VW was asleep for 20 years……. and the 2 years by which Frazz missed leap year is a tenth of that.

Not quite sure where the analogy proeeds from there — did Rip miss something “by a whisker?”

It’s been so long since I read it.

And Happy Birthday, Studakas! Lucky you — as the rest of us boomers turn 60, you’ll only be 15!

    Sorta.

OTOH, the ancient wise men are said to have reminded us, “He who has the most birthdays lives the longest.”

@BipseyTrue enough, On the other hand, the girl in the strip is suggesting that Frazz was born 1 day before February 29th, and Frazz is answering that he was, in fact, born 731 days before February 29th. So I wouldn’t say that his answer is wrong.

My Grandmother was born on Feb 29, 1888 which would make her 124 years old, or 31 leap years.

A woman I work with is a Leap Day baby, since she only has a real b-day once every 4 years she turns it into a week-long celebration.

Susan: I think it is 22. I thought of him working his way through college at night or on partial load; or else trying to save up enough to get through with less lifetime debt. His teacher girlfriend seems a bit young too, like she has graduated and teaching for only a year or two.

I once bought a motorcycle with a one-year warranty on leap year day. Told the salesman, “so it’s in warranty till the next February 29th, right?” He almost fell for it. Then he got all the paperwork and re-dated it to March 1. Sigh. Shoulda kept quiet….

Thanks for the help, Susan. Very funny, simpsonsfan….

zedman, that’s true, but shhhhhhh……….We kind of protect him around here. We just let him be. BTW, he was also a bartender in downtown Paw Paw for awhile….(Sometimes he’d perform as an Elvis imitator…He was REALLY good at it!). But he’s been going through the Burger King drive through several time a night now, so, I don’t know…..Might want to come by and catch a sighting of him, while you can!

My daughter is a leap-year baby from 1980. She was on the local tv news at 4 hours old. They told me she was the cutest baby born that day and that’s why they chose her. She’s still cute, and still on tv!

@SusanSunshine – I think 1976 and 1980 would have been leap years. So I’ll go ahead and conjecture that he’s turning 32.
