Wouldn’t it be nice if more religious proclamations were so self-evidently true?

Col. Robert R. McCormick’s attempts at reformed/simplified spelling through the vehicle of his Chicago Tribune largely failed: http://tinyurl.com/3byxz5d

One goes to Dunkin Donuts to by commerial food. Grandma breaks out the pots, flour, puts on her well worn apron and makes doughnuts. We could simplify American English and spelling. We could also tear down all our beautiful buildings and put up Soviet style blocks. Clothing styles could be simplified if all were required to wear Mao jackets and army pants. Wouldn’t life be easier. There is a beauty in the complexity and history of American English. Tough languge to learn but a piano isn’t easy to learn either. So speakers don’t know the difference between there, their, and they’re.Do you want them shortened to thar.

I’d like to hear them burp Cantata BWV 82 “Ich Habe Genug” by J.S. Bach. If your creating a new religion, go all out.

simpsonfan2; great one! Love the double entendre, and all the other puns, too. Thanks Wiley, great to see the “gang” back at Flo’s.

Hate to see “your” used for you’re. Nobody seems to recognize contractions since Twitter. ;-(

I’m thinking you tend to be anal retentive about the whole English language, so I’d like to add on to your comment.

Commas and periods should go inside the quotation, e.g., “as in ‘draft,’ hiccup,’ ‘tho,’ or ‘thru.’”

“Per se” means something like “intrinsically” or “by definition,” e.g., drunk driving over a certain limit or unreasonably anticompetitive price fixing among competitors is illegal per se. “Per se” does not mean “exactly.” At least you spelled and italicized it correctly.

    Hope this helps.

hildagunnur: or koff, and save the C for ch, substituting k or s for the rest. Or just go to the phonetic alphabet so everyone would talk the same and the world of dialects would be lost. As Shaw claimed, ghoti spells fish.

I sometimes think (when I do belch-as I live alone) how different it would be if one always did what is most convenient. In actuality, if anyone else were in my home I would find myself a place where any activity that involves bodily noises where it is unheard. I don’t even use the downstairs powder room when anyone else is there. I DO however, use abbreviations of all kinds because I am a slow and awkward typist. I also realise that language is meant to change and while some changes are obviously regrettable, others bring more welcome color to all languages- and American English is probably the most changed of all. For those of us who study it, it is also a doorway to many other languages-especially once you learn one.
