That shopping cart is not an exaggeration! Some schools are asking the kids to bring reams of copy paper, kleenex, glue sticks (a whole bundle,not just one.) And it isn’t the teachers’ idea, it’s admin. They are so poorly funded these days that they can’t afford for your kid to blow his nose. Then the teachers get way more than they need, and end up giving away a bunch of the supplies because they don’t have storage room. It’s crazy. Back in the day, I was doing good to send a dollar for my kid’s lunch. No way could we have afforded this.
You forgot the calculator for 1st graders and the new laptop (every year) for the 6th grade & up. Oh, yeah, don’t forget to make sure they all have cellphones.
I got new stuff every couple of years. Even though the teachers said, “you don’t need a report cover” or “any paper will do”, the students that used the good stuff(new ones) got better grades. When parents do not get involved and buy the proper supplies, the child won’t be motivated, the teacher looks down on him/her.Then the parent wonders why the kid won’t go to college (if they can’t afford to pay for supplies in k-12, they will drop the ball in college and the kid will end up a starving student. Going straight to work looks better and better.
How else?! She’ll just charge it and make $15.00 minimum monthly payments until eventually . . . maybe . . . she’ll finally get it paid off just in time for the next school year . . . when she’ll have to do this same thing all over again!
Dunno where crabbyrino and LuvThemPluggers kids go to school, but my wife is an elem. teacher in Mich. and BELIEVE me she does NOT get so much stuff that she ends up giving it away. And also, when I went to school, it was up to my folks to make sure I had notebooks, pencils, crayons, ruler, etc. ALL of that is now funished by the teacher. (Out of her own pocket, I might add.)

When did going back to school get so complicated? I got a notebook (they were all the same kind and size), a few pencils, an eraser, and a pen.

They got so complicated when teachers learned that parents would jump through hoops for them. Glitter? Highlighter? Markers? for 2nd graders?

yup, the pencil box with built in sharpener and ruler is all we needed to get smarter, now it is the same as it never was.
