When we were a kid, the morning news would announce “It’s 17 minutes before the hour.” Now, CNN and Fox would say “7:17 Eastern time”; “6:17 Central time”; “5:17 Mountain time”; “4:17 Pacific time.”
They actually say it that way in the event they are rebroadcast in a different time slot, say live at 6AM and rebroadcast at 8AM locally or at a syndicated station.
I hate it when people say ‘fifteen after’ or ‘fifteen till’ etc. When someone asks you the time, tell them the time. Don’t give them half of the information they need.
