Forgive me if I don’t seem cheerfull. I got into a fight today with a girl who pulled a knife on me. Relying on my marial arts training I blocked her attack flipped her over then broke her nose. As I was in position to finish her off for good I recalled my dad’s wisdom. He had said that in harsh moments that I could be foolish and do something that I would regret for the rest of my life, or fight the anger and use common sense to make a clear decision to do what is right. I could have killed that girl but instead used the submission techniques that my father taught me to disarm the girl. I then ran home to the loving arms of my dad and cried for about an hour. I begged him to stay home tonight because I didn’t want to be alone. He’s here by my side. He said that he was proud of me for using good judgement and that he was right for putting his trust in me. he says that I am maturing into a fine young woman. My question to all of you is ( am I a monster, or is my father you all know as wolfbyte36 right). Your opinions are important to me please let me know what you think.

Calvin: dang, dad will have to lie down on the floor to read the newsppr.

Hobbes: keep calm and just read the manual in all 3 langs ok!

Ladywolf, your father sounds like a very wise man. These days, life seems to be cheap and people are all to willing to shed others blood. That you showed the restraint and wisdom not to is commendable and a testament to your fathers training. I would suggest being alittle more careful about who you hang out with, though, and if someone you are around starts being belligerent, it’s usually best just to leave before things come to blows. Keep up the good work, I’m sure your father is proud of you.

Ladywolf17 fell asleep on my shoulder. Thank you all for your comments she needed to know that there are people in this world who care for one another. thank you for being understanding and for being her friend. Now I have to skip work and talk to the other girls parents. They must be pretty mad that their daughter has a broken nose. You know I as a single Parent try to teach my daughter that violence is not the answer to any problem. And that fighting should be used only if it is necessary to defend yourself. My daughter was scared because she had never been in this situation before. But I am proud of her for the way she handled her self today. Wish me luck in talking to the other girls parents. I’ll let you all know how it all turns out.

ladywolf17 Defending yourself when attacked is quite legitimate. No question there. Probably only you know whether breaking her nose was necessary but I doubt anyone would fault you for it. Since you apparently had the upper hand and were in no eminent danger after you flipped her, to kill her at that point would have been murder, not self defense. So yes, you chose well.

However, I would urge you to be extremely careful regarding this person. You probably have an enemy for life who may be obsessed with getting revenge. And if she pulled a knife on you once with little provocation she probably won’t hesitate to do it again if she gets an opportunity.

Only you really know your situation, how much “face” she lost and what it means to her, how dangerous to you she will be, and whether it would be prudent to inform the police about the incident. In any case, don’t let your guard down. I doubt she will be grateful that you spared her life.

Son covered in glue and carpet glued while husband (not reading instructions) watched sci fi and was putting it together. MESS!!!! Our discussion next should have been in a foreign language for as much good as it did. Ha Ha . Boys will be boys.

Now ladywolf and wolfbyte 36: As a trauma center nurse of 20 plus years of experience, your teachings to your daughter were great. She stopped her assaulant and yet controlled herself from stepping over the line and losing the battle. Her martial arts training makes her abilities as lethal as the knife the other girl pulled on her. Breaking the nose was the thing to do. That is what my father taught me also. Stop the assault, then leave, then report to the police. Now you need to report to the police to have this on record just don’t press charges. The authorities need to know the other girl is having problems and maybe will be able to steer her toward help. In Texas there are many outreach programs to help teens if they want it. Good luck and thank you for not hurting her worse. It would forever change your life. Be careful young lady. She is your enemy now. Watch your surroundings. God be with you.

Ladysmith asked us for our opinion of how she did in a difficult and immediate situation. I think she did admirably. She (1) got herself out of danger, and (2) did not press further to do something she would carry with her the rest of her life. More, (3) she asked the opinion of people she enjoys and respects, even if from a distance. Some replied, reassuring her; others objected, some with abuse. So sad.

Regarding Calvin, as usual, Watterson is funny, in several directions simultaneously. I also like that the model is for six and up, since very young children (ages 2-6 or so) are naturals at learning multiple languages.

Count me in with those in this forum who say we should stick to discussing the daily Calvin and Hobbes comic.

To ladywolf17 and wolfbyte36: take your messed up, made up stories to a more appropriate forum.

About the comic: I used to assemble plastic models when I was younger, and they are certainly not made for the likes of Calvin to put together. At least Hobbes is trying to read the instructions. Who gave Calvin the model glue anyway? Around here, the sale of model glue is restricted to adults because you can get get a ‘high’ from sniffing. Hey - that’s how Calvin imagines Hobbes is a real tiger!

Hey Calvin! You should ask your daddy to help you assembling a model airplane with the instruction. If you got your fingers stuck together with that kind of glue, use the nail polish to remove the glue from your fingers right away. It works well. I just guess that might help or not. I did that before.

wolfbyte36 & ladywolf17 You did the right thing to protect yourselves from the assilant who pulled the knife against you. Best thing is to call the police and arrest the assilant with that kind of weapon. If assilant tries to harm me with that kind of weapon, I will scream and call the police. I do not appreciate the way the assilant does such stupid thing to me for no reason. Next time please do not post your comment on this. This is for something to comment funnily and make all of us laughing and enjoying to read the comic. Peace and be happy!

Toys that are restricted to an age limit, such as Calvin’s model plane, are done so for safety reasons. Usually this is due to the risk of chocking .

I agree with what was said earlier, if you can find it in all of the posts regarding the bogus story, who was dumb enough to give Calvin the model and the glue in the first place? And then did not keep an eye on him? A lapse of good reasoning.

I have been know to be more gullible in the past, but on this issue I’m skepticle. To discuss a situation like that with people you have just encountered doesn’t seem right. Second, my son(13yrs) has been in martial arts and they are taught once the individual is repelled, you do not go on the offensive unless needed. Martial arts are taught to be defensive not offensive. Her descipion goes against the principles of martial arts. If my son was able to repell the knife and flip the indivual over, I would not be proud if he went one step further and used his skills to hurt. Just an opinion, but everything I’ve heard for the last few days sounds fishy.

I second Carmy’s opinion on how to handle/respond to ladywolf and wolfbyte’s posts. Give them the benefit of the doubt in your observations/response or just ignore them (like good troll handling technique) if you can’t be constructive.

Look at it as a harm/benefit equation.

If ladywolf is lying, then there’s minor harm in responding (drama/troll/whatever feeding) and minor benefit (troll goes away) in ignoring.

If ladywolf is telling the truth, then there’s major benefit in responding compassionately and minor harm in ignoring.

I’d say that the possibility of major benefit wins out, so I agree with the benefit of the doubt.

Assuming that what you’re saying is true, ladywolf, first, please understand that some skepticism is natural on an online forum. Don’t take it personally.

Second, you were right to protect yourself but not to take it further. Martial arts is about balancing your adrenaline with control, which is what you did.

I agree that you need to report the incident to the authorities and reconsider the situations that you put yourself in. Unless your attacker is completely nutso and attacked you at random, avoid situations with troubled and potentially violent people.

Remember, the fight you best win is the fight that you make unnecessary.

Well, I hope that someone isn’t attacked and killed by the person who got away, you showed courage but lack wisdom,

@LadyWolf: You did what you had to do to protect yourself. But the fact that ‘killing’ crossed your mind also needs to be looked into. That kind of a sentiment cannot be justified unless you were sure of her intent to kill. If you used the sentence “could have killed her” only as a prop to the next sentence where your better sense prevailed, it can still be ignored as harmless vanity; but if killing her really did cross your mind even after subduing her, then you really should re-prioritize your options and keep killing at the very end of the list (only when you are dead sure of the other person’s intent).

As far as bringing your problems here is concerned, even though it can get quite tempting (in a very self-flattering way)for a lot of people (I’m including myself here) to offer advice that they think is right, it is also stressful for some people to be let in on other peoples problems. So, and I say this respectfully, I think you should take it to another (appropriate) social network and not a comic site where people come for pure comic-relief. Since you are appealing to an unknown demographic anyway, it shouldn’t make a real difference to the quality of response you get (and you will also hopefully not get panned).

    Cheers All..
