We already had that, shortly after the 2000 SElection. We have had unreliable, unverifiable computers (remember “GIGO”?) in the middle of our elections, serviced by corporate ‘specialist’ personnel instead of municipal ‘public servants’ and citizen poll monitors.Even if you use a paper ballot, the downtown tabulator that adds up the votes is locked away from public scrutiny.See Black Box Voting andThe Brad Blog for details and more recent bad news.

And I’ll bet that web site details how “dead” voters can come back to life and legally vote in Chicago!

Funny how the ballot scanner at my polling place looks just like an office paper shredder. When I was an election inspector I had to tell people that since this is Indiana, the counters were programed to only record votes for republican candidates.

@galanti – If that is true, it’s illegal. And we send monitors to other countries to help stop election fraud???

When you come down to it, civilization itself works on the honor system. No matter how many times you’re disappointed in it, you keep coming back to it, because, really, what’s the alternative?
