With the massively growing debt, seniors will have to be paying the government in their retirement to help pay the interest to China…

Probably should not have put FICA into the general fund, then…

If we hadn’t spent trillions in Iraq, going after a false enemy, there would be no shortfall.

cjkinsey - yes there would have been. It’s about the number of people that are going to be eligible for those benefits versus the number of people paying into the system to provide the money to pay for those benefits.

    It’s always been the issue.

    “It’s always been the issue.”

At least, it was until Reagan doubled the FICA tax. Then it became an issue again when we started putting the funds from FICA into the general fund.

For once, I agree with you Daniel. The only two ways to fix these balooning programs with the boomers generation now hitting retirement age is to either a) raise taxes (boo) or b) reduce benefits. Seeing as none of these programs were designed to be as large as they are, I’m all for option b. But, that itself carries consequences that if left untreated will become serious issues.

What kind of mess has this country (both sides of the aisle) gotten itself into?

So, you’re against the Reagan way of doing things?

What better way to get rid of all those nasty entitlements than to just bankrupt the entire system.
