A nuclear explosion vaporizes everything at ground zero, right? How about consolidating all the radioactive waste in 1 place, and have 1 underground explosion every 10 years or so, to destroy all the rest of it? Sounds like a way to minimize the amount of waste.
Unfortunately, there’s no good way to get rid of nuclear waste. Except for, you know, making sure the town by the hole you bury it in is relatively small.

mikew: Unfortunately, vaporizing doesn’t affect radioactivity; vaporize the waste and you just get radioactive vapour (aka “fallout”).
