A good example of dramatic irony is in my favourite comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. We sometimes see Hobbes doing something behind Calvin’s back that Calvin doesn’t know about or read an insulting comment that Hobbes makes to Calvin that Calvin doesn’t recognise as an insult – at least not immediately. Of course, many readers still believe that Calvin imagines all the things that Hobbes does and says despite details such as this.
I’ve heard the term dramatic irony. But what would comedy irony be? Like in today’s comic strip, would comedic irony be when the joke goes over the audience heads … but the comedian doesn’t know it?
I thought I heard dramatic irony was when an actor was truly displaying the emotions and not just acting. Let’s say, in Marley and Me, in the scene after he has to put Marley to sleep, the actor wasn’t just acting sad and crying, but crying for real. I don’t know that this happened, I haven’t seen movie but read the book. Anyway, that’s what I learned dramatic irony was.
