I once considered becoming a grade school teacher. Didn’t really fit my personality all that well (I’m a maker in my heart and teaching, which IS fun for me, doesn’t give me that “see what you got done” aspect of building stuff). But I was young and teaching IS fun… if the students are amenable; so I considered it. What decided against it for me was two things: The chaos and the high-pitched LOUD voices.
Competition running or almost any new physical effort means a certain amount of personal adjustment to get into the groove. But it also requires adjusting to the different outlooks of others who practice the sport, from the part timer to the deeply dedicated. Sometimes that’s harder.
A few years ago an online running friend of mine died after qualifying for Boston so we held a virtual memorial race to benefit his widow. A lot of us were old and slow and low miles runners so we ran a virtual Boston over a week. I made a map and the marker for each person moved on the map to show where on the Boston course they would be and the race had a dedicated page where we cheered each other on and posted videos of stuff like the scream tunnel as each person passed through it. It came out really cool. I think it distracted us from being miserable over our friend and wanting to quit running, and we raised a tidy little sum for his wife and kids.
My evil twin with facial hair the name of which nannybot won’t let me post would stand by the race route and hand a runner one of those little paper cups that they gulp down & toss on the ground* – but filled with vodka……….
*Is there a question on the entry forms for those races that asks if you are a littering slob, and you have to say yes to get in?
Another strip laden with in-jokes that only serious runners would even get, let alone appreciate. I wonder why Mallett even bothers with the backstory about the school and Frazz’s supposed music career, since he obviously cares so little about them.
