“Controversial thesis: If the highest paid person in your university or college is the basketball coach or the football coach, then it is not a university, it is a sporting franchise with a side hustle in tertiary education.”- Michael F. Bird

The popularity of a college has nothing to do with academics!

The correct answer was “Yes”. It’s all of the above, physics of arcing the ball to the receiver, politics in arguing with the refs, history by studying “tape” of the opponent, and finally literature by reading the X’s and O’s. ;) There’s also chemistry, but she didn’t ask about that.

College Sport players get scholarships their degree and yet spend hours a day on the “field” and not in class. And few are truly competent students. Sad to real academic students who struggle often without scholarships and have to borrow a ton of money to get that Degree. No wonder we have to import Doctors from afar. We need to pay medical students way toward their degrees and skills. Sport time are short – Doctors/nursing 40 plus years.

I think Gladys is thinking of the old College Bowl TV show that pitted colleges mental wits against eachother to see whose college was the smartest. I always had more interest in this program than the football/basketball competitions. It was something my mother/teacher had in common.

Any school that accepts money from the NCAA for playing football to basketball on TV should have their non-profit status revoked and required to pay income tax.

University Challenge is a popular TV show in the UK and yes, they compete on their knowledge of academic subjects, like a very high-powered pub quiz.
