The thing in panel 1 that looked to me like googly eyes with a hat is actually (turns to the previous strip) the crow (raven?) with a ruff. I can’t remember their name.
On a MeTV Popeye anniversary special the other day, they told us that Popeye started out in a comic called Thimble Theater. Which made me think of Thimblefist, and got me wondering what, if any, parallels can be drawn between Popeye and Olive Oyl, and Thimblefist and HomeStyle.
I’m looking forward to learning more about these two.
Ah yes. After five years in a balloon, after going from earth to moon, after going around the world in 80 days, After travelling 20,000 leagues under the sea, after a journey to the center of the earth, Jules is finally back from the mysterious island.
If I had the money, I would commission Georgia for a watercolor painting for our home. It would be a sunrise or sunset over a tranquil meadow, but the final choice would be the artists. No people, no technology, just nature. I see a lot of Impressionism in Georgia’s work, especially hints of Claude Monet. However, she does not try to replicate the Master; Georgia’s vision is always her own.
Rare sighting of BCN strip without speech! All the easier to enjoy the lovely sunrise, and spot Burt sunning like a mermaid on the wall, and see flowers in the sunrays in HomeStyle and Thimblefist’s tree.
Just one concern: Back in the day when Mags was a young princess, she captured Jules and tried him for violating the Raccoon/Opossum treaty. I hope he is able to forgive.

Thimblefist and Homestyle are just the beginning. Jules is gathering the troops. Opossums and maybe sloths. All the denizens of the forest.

At the Cosmo Nursery
Lupinium: Hi, Trev. I’ve come to plant this pink Blossom of Blessing Ora Z gave me.
Trevor-Hotep: I see you’re still a bit pink too.
Lupinium: That’s right. I’ve been working in Thomios’s kitchen to develop new tomato recipes.
Trev: Great. I’ve been working on some new varieties of tomatoes.
Lupinium: I’ll bet Floofnet the Joyous’ culinary school could do with some. It’s salad season.
Trev: I think they already have some. Not sure how they got there, though.
Violet-Ifa: I’ll never tell!
Lupinium: Anyway, got any new flowers? Whether magical or not.
Trev: Yes. I’ve got some daffy daffodils blooming.
Lupinium: Just the thing. I could use them in my tumbling act.
Trev: And some singing chrysanthemums.
Lupinium: They’re sure not to stay mum.

In the first panel, if I’m reading it right, I think it’s so cute and clever how the Z’s turn into a question mark.

All this gorgeousness is giving me such an Itchycoo Park vibe:
Over bridge of sighs
To rest my eyes in shades of green
Under dreaming spires
To Itchycoo Park, that’s where I’ve been
(What did you feel there?) well, I cried
(But why the tears there?) tell you why
It’s all too beautiful, it’s all too beautiful
It’s all too beautiful, it’s all too beautiful!

Kander and Erb, from Cabaret: Tomorrow Belongs to Me
The moles in the meadow all claim their prize
The raccoons regroup as we see
Now comes another as the dawn arrives,
Tomorrow belongs to “We!”
…….
The cats in the Pink House observe with concern
The moles in their tunnels run free,
But those lawn potatoes will very soon learn
Tomorrow belongs to “We!”
…….
And now the July Bug arrives on the scene,
What now will develop we’ll see,
The moles will learn it doesn’t pay to be mean,
Tomorrow belongs to “We!”

“Ho! Racoons of the mountain side!
Ho! dwellers in the vales!
Ho! ye who by the chafing tide
Have roughened in the gales!
Leave barn and byre, leave kin and kit.
Lay by the bloodless spade;
Let desk, and case, and counter rot.
And burn your books of trade.
The despot roves your fairest lands;
And till he flies or fears,
Your fields must grow but armed bands,
Your sheaves be sheaves of spears!
Give up to mildew and to rust
The useless tools of gain;
And feed your country’s sacred dust
With floods of crimson rain!
Come, with the weapons at your call —
With teeth, and claws like knife,
He wields the deadliest blade of all
Who lightest holds his life.
The arm that drives its unbought blows
With all a patriot’s scorn,
Might brain a tyrant with a rose,
Or stab him with a thorn.
Does any falter? let him turn
To some brave maiden’s eyes,
And catch the holy fires that burn
In those sublunar skies.
Oh! could you like your women feel,
And in their spirit march,
A day might see your lines of steel
Beneath the victor’s arch.
What hope, O God! would not grow warm
When thoughts like these give cheer?
The Lily calmly braves the storm,
And shall the Palm-tree fear?
No! rather let its branches court
The rack that sweeps the plain;
And from the Lily’s regal port
Learn how to breast the strain!
Ho! Raccoons of the mountain side!
Ho! dwellers in the vales!
Ho! ye who by the roaring tide
Have roughened in the gales!
Come! flocking gayly to the fight,
From forest, hill, and lake;
We battle for our Country’s right,
And for the Lily’s sake!

Now I’m hearing “Men of Harlech:”
Folk of Forest, stop your dreaming!
Can’t you see their mole-claws gleaming?
Hear the fury of their digging
Under home and field!
From the hills rebounding,
Hear Jules summons sounding,
Summon all to raccoons’ call,
The Under Foe confounding!

And don’t forget the mice were the ones who made up the plan to defeat Wicket. And Jules was a huge player in that attack!
