Janis (no spring chicken) carrying a load much heavier than her own body weight is a demonstration of the superhuman powers afforded by the laws of cartoon physics.
Arlo, there are good people who already have that much expertise, and more. They rely on just this kind of work to support their family. Let them handle it. Apply your internet skills to something less stressful, like cat videos.
If you already have a base knowledge and some experience, it can be a good tool to get you over minor technical humps. That said I’ve seen some “tips” that are everywhere from shoddy to unsafe. Use at your own risk.
My wife sometimes asks if I’m sure I can do something but if I say yes, she’s like “Ok then”. After 26 years she’s lost her doubts. God blessed me, of that I have no doubt, both with a wonderful wife and with the ability to “figure it out.” Much as I hate to say it, my dad was really good at fixing things too and um, encouraged(?) me to volunteer to help him… often.
I will paint, replace AC wall outlets and light switches and some yard work. The rest not so much, because I can see what I did wrong and it will bug me for the forever.
And don’t watch those home “repair” shows on TV. My husband (45 years of high end building renovation) is aghast when we are out at the doctor’s and they have their TV tuned to HGTV. He says that no real worker would pull the demo stunts that they portray.
I have gotten too old for this kind of work. Youtube has some good stuff but face facts Arlo. Like Andy told Aunt Bea once about a busted freezer “Call the man!”
Last house was a major fixer and one wall on the lower floor had to be replaced, including a post (one of three) and beam that held up the second floor. I did not try to do it myself.
Ha! This week’s “Zits” arc was about watching YouTube to learn how to fix a plumbing leak. Surprisingly, it turned out just fine!… but then, Arlo wasn’t involved. ;)
Oh come-on, this IS how you learn new things! Do some homework, figure out a plan, support the roof and change out the bad part. If it’s too much you go hire help but you did try!You only live once….
My house today – hubby broke the back sliding glass door. He thought we could fix it. I stupidly tried. After a couple of hours, I told him to find someone to do it – I don’t have the tools needed or the know how.
The window and door guy took all of ten minutes to fix it, for less than $100, which for a same day emergency call isn’t bad.
Termites? Find their nest quick! Chances are they’re in the house as well.
Nightmare fuel! My old employer bought up several old buildings near the campus… then discovered that that entire city block’s buildings were infested with termites.

That’s right Janis, stand by your man — or fireman-carry him out of danger, whatever it takes.

Well done Janis. I totally agree with not letting Arlo start something he has no idea how to do. She’s a strong, powerhouse woman.
