Do NOT try to get selfies with the bison!

And yeah, I know the joke about calling it tourist season even though you can’t get a tag for ’em.

I wish I had the photos I took of the tourists getting way too close to a herd in Yellowstone in 1991. And that was before cell phones with cameras… I can only imagine what it is like now.

The invasion of a bison’s personal space is totally inappropriate, from what I’ve seen on the Internet. No use trying to talk some sense into those idiots!! Arrest or hefty fines, as well as closing off that area of Yellowstone may be the only solution.

If they are dumb enough to try to get THAT CLOSE to a massively heavy and somewhat bad tempered critter, I say let them face the consequences! It cannot do anything but improve the Gene Pool in the long run!

While at Yellowstone in the ‘60s, a ranger told us about luckily driving by at the right time and stopping a mom who had smeared her child’s face with honey to get a picture of a bear licking it off ….

Recently there have been stories of tourists helping a baby bison, elk, etc. The authorities kill the babies because they were touched by humans and probably will be rejected by the herd. How sad!

    NO TOUCH!

A customer had one as a pet. It stuck its head inside my station wagon to get a closer look.

Stupid tourist season, again. For some reason people are extra stupid when they are on the boardwalks. Not sure why they think an animal that size can’t just step up onto the boardwalk. It’s not like there is a force field around the boardwalk. And yes, it’s more inconvenient to have to go around the other way, or wait out a bison, but sure a lot safer. Trying to get a close up picture with a bison is just plain stupid. Sad thing is, just enough people get away with it to encourage others to try it too. They ask people to stay at least 25 yards away from bison and elk and a 100 yards from bears for good reason. It’s not to be mean, it’s to keep people safe. Not going to post any links, just go to YouTube and search people, man, or woman with bison, and you will find a lot of videos of stupid people. You can also search car or motorcycle and bison. ;)

The worst one so far this year was some guy thought he’d ‘help’ a bison calf. His actions resulted in the calf being rejected by its mother and the herd. Which resulted in it having to be euthanized, as it was creating a hazardous situation on the roads.

Just a reminder, stay on the paths in the thermal areas. One wrong step and they might recover a shoe or a hat, but that’s all they might recover.

Between these idiots and the ones taking selfies on cliffs and ledges and falling off, it really is amazing how stupid people have become.

A visitor to Yellow Stone from Hawaii thought he saw an abandoned bison calf in trouble and lifted it to dry land. The authorities said the herd rejected the calf after that human touch, and euthanized it. Hawaiians know that touching wildlife is forbidden, sea turtles, monk seals, dolphins, etc., the man should have known better but pled guilty and paid the fines. Why couldn’t the authorities have saved the calf? There are herds kept on ranches throughout the plains, and bottle-feeding orphaned animals is well known.

Down here in Florida we usually see grins like that on the alligators. “Send more tourists, the last ones were delicious.”
