More whining about inflation. In 1969 a full-sized candy bar was a nickel (USD), ten years later: a quarter. Why do people think a fiat currency has any real value?
My first apartment was only half a block from the store, so I would walk there. Even so, it wasn’t easy carrying home three large paper shopping bags filled with 20-25 dollars-worth of groceries.
Crudités and tequila at “Wegners” – if you’re Dr. Oz pretending you live in Pennsylvania!
There’s a store named Wegman’s. And there’s a store named Redner’s. Seems he “mushed them together” without even having a stroke to explain that. “Crudités” are more commonly known as a “Veggie Tray” ‘round here. And you actually can’t buy hard liquor in the grocery store in Pennsylvania.
When I was first married, back in the early ‘70s, I could buy a weeks’ worth of groceries for two, including a CARTON of cigarettes, for $25. Now we can barely get lunch at McD for that. EGADS!!!!! (And, no, haven’t had to worry about the price of cigarettes for decades.)
I used to get gas by the dollar amount, usually $20 in my Honda. They sure make those pumps better; I can reach $20 in no time at all. It doesn’t take me as far. Must be my old butt getting heavier (insert chin scratching emoji here).
I can see it, but it depends on what you buy. 40 lbs. of dry pinto beans is under $50 at Sam’s Club, and so is 100 lbs. of rice. On the other hand, I was just there today, buying Low-sodium V-8 for a family member, and it’s gone up 40+ % in the last three months. Food costs are not included in the inflation numbers the Fed uses, so the actual inflation rate for regular people is probably closer to 20% than 8%.
Before Covid husband had us eating lunch at Wendys daily – it cost us US$3 and change for 3 junior burgers (mine was plain) and 2 senior sodas (free). Now we go out for lunch once in awhile to keep him happy as try to stay home as much as possible, and the same meal costs close to US$6.

What would be considered fifty dollars’ worth of groceries when using only one bag?

Not just picking up the bag but hoping the bag holds and does not break ;-)

When I was a kid I never dreamed I’d one day live in a $1 million plus home.
