When we moved to Adelaide (it was after 1836) my father did a lot of concreting. A driveway, and paths around the garden. Day after day, he poured the concrete, tamped it down, levelled it with a screed, and then carefully smoothed it to a perfect finish with a float. Then he left it to set overnight.
And every morning he would go out and find cat footprints in the concrete. We didn’t have a cat then.
I learned a lot from that. The most important thing was that, if you want to lay concrete outside, you need an extensive vocabulary.
The hard reality of the situation is just hitting home for young Lupin! Poor Pengo looks like he took a green paw to the breadbasket. I guess fireworks will erupt when Woman turns up.
Okay BCN crew, I just had the weirdest thing happen here…I was trying to leave my comment further up, which is hard typing around Loaner Cat, and was dragging my laptop mouse across the screen when I went over someone’s name when a box popped up that would let me search their history of comments and there was some other stuff, but it happened so quick and then disappeared. I’m using Opera and it’s based on chromium. You guys are so good. Any ideas?
There is a major winter storm in St. Louis today…tonight…and tomorrow. As I type this, there is a coating of ice being laid down, and tonight we are forecast to receive about one foot of snow. When the snow stops sometime tomorrow, the temperature will go down to about one degree (F).
For the previous twenty-four hours, the people on local television news have been screaming into the camera that we will get 1" to 96" of snow, ice, hail, total eclipse, zombie apocalypse, dogs & cats living together. “Get to the market!” they cry. “Stock up on milk, bread, and eggs before it is too late!”
The reaction to our impending doom* is somewhat different in my house. Marie did rush out last night, but it wasn’t to the market. She went to our local library to pick up all her books on reserve. We may die in this unfolding arctic wasteland and be eaten by our cats, but at least we will be well-read!
Yes! I went back and read the original yesterday because I love Lupin’s expression in panel 4 and the big overhead apartment shot (with cameos from certain mouse characters who had yet to be introduced). You have to love the phases here, first denial, then bargaining, although I’m not sure what to call panel 4.
Oh, I was wishing they would put up today’s too!!! I think somebody was lucky enough to get this in the last sale? Trying very hard not to be totally consumed by jealousy, chuckle.
All ya’ll: visit Cat’s Cafe…if you don’t already do so. Matt’s been thru a horribly bad time & had taken some time off & he’s kinda back now. But, he needs some of the love & concern we share so freely with each other here at BCN. His gentle, sweet comics show so much love for everybody, we need to give some of it back to him, in his hour of need. The same way Georgia gives us a laugh, a sigh & so much more!
There’s a kitty footprint in the middle of the sidewalk leading to the front porch of my 1916 Bungalow. Only one – some distance from the edge of the sidewalk and quite deep. I love to speculate about how it got there.
I’ve always wondered why the cats say OMC instead of OMG. Do cats have a different god or gods than we humans do? And it’s not like humans say Oh My Human.
“While thumbing through the medieval manuscript (15th century) in July 2011, Emir O. Filipović, a teaching and research assistant at the University of Sarajevo, discovered pages of the book stained with the inky paw prints of a cat and snapped a picture—” https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/130326-animals-medieval-manuscript-books-cats-history#:~:text=While%20thumbing%20through%20the%20medieval,and%20students%20for%20a%20laugh.
This never fails to remind me of a beautiful book “Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics” by Burton Silver and Heather Busch. I treasure my copy and consult it at least once a year. Make no mistake, it is a parody but very high parody. It is so charming and aimed at all those who wish their cat’s talents were more appreciated. It wasn’t until I got to the section showing one cat artist out horseback riding with her friend that I realized I had been taken in by a loving, beautifully envisioned, elaborately illustrated send-up of the haughty world of Art.
A note for epidemiology fans: a study of contact contagion was performed by putting “black light” (fluorescent) paint on the skin of test subjects. After an hour, the room was darkened and flooded with UV light, which revealed all the places which had been touched. Almost every surface glowed, including, to the surprise of the researchers, their own skin and clothing which they had thought they had taken care NOT to touch.

So, the surprising thing here is that Lupin is showing genuine remorse and empathy for the chaos he has wrought.
At Christmas, we saw him joyfully knocking things off of tables and the mantle – no remorse whatsoever.
For a cat, is this “growth” from the remorse and upset view to pure glee?
