An iron clad will is a magnet for lawyers who need more billable hours.

I kept after my parents to do a will. They lived in a state where if someone died intestate, the probate could take years, even for their small, uncomplicated estate. They didn’t. After my dad died, I was visiting my mother and I set up my laptop and turned on the camera to record her, with her knowledge.

She spoke for several minutes about who she wanted to get what, etc. A few days later she died. When it came time to get an attorney and get the estate into probate, that 4 minute video sped things right along and saved a lot in legal fees once the probate judge saw it. Such a video might not work in every state or with every judge, but it sure helped my brother and myself.

My parents died within a month of each other, both without wills. Their estate was nothing but that didn’t stop the stupid calls. “John has Dad’s miniature spoon collection!” etc.

My dad passed away 2 weeks ago today. Fortunately Dad redid his will recently. Also, my brother and I are content, not trying to take what the other wants.
