Tone is everything. Gus never struck me as the kind of parent that tried to guilt trip his kids. But, Mary Lu’s comment makes me wonder. Hope not, life is tough enough without having to put up with that. You have a spouse, and kid(s) and parent(s) and souse’s parent(s) and a job, etc. Your time is finite and they all want/need more than you have.

he is probably speaking from his own personal experiences. there are just a handful of people who mean that much to me that i keep in contact with…keeping the lines of communication open is a two-way street. the ones who disappoint me are in one-way street category. i figure when my time comes they can read about me in one or two lines in the paper.

I’ve read this comic from its beginning in the newspapers. Was even more fun when I learned my dad read it also and we could laugh about the quirks of relationships. I’ve continued to read it the almost 30 years since he’s passed on. Then I made the mistake of reading the comments here. Big difference in men born of his generation, and those lucky enough to still be alive and able to post here.

The first time I met my husband , he leaned out of his car and yelled You’re Gorgeous. I was 21 he was 37.We kept in touch all these years. As of August 2021 we have been married 7 years. I’m 59 and he’s 77. I still laugh about our first meeting.

My mother died Tuesday night. This is too soon. Ugh. At least my mother and I were close, and I am able to say that I have very few regrets.

Thank you for sharing your story. Reminded me of another comment from my brother-in-law. He quipped his mother would introduce him as her daughter-in-law‘s first husband.
