if mum could only join in the imaginative play, be the queen ant, instead of being ‘grown up’… c&h illlustrates differences between children’s imaginative play and adults loss of same for ‘realism’, well.
caterpillar = clothes, when calvin is imagining, he can carry the caterpillar; last frame shows the ‘real’ situation in which calvins imagination is operating. 50x, no worries!
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah.
The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah.
The ants go marching one by one, the little one stops to carp at Mom
And they all go marching down … to the earth … to get out … of the rain,
boom, boom, boom, boom
boom, boom, boom, boom

There have been recent news stories about a team of German scientists looking to find out how ants avoid collisions so that they can apply the same principles to cars on the motorways. One finding seems to be that ants are unselfish - never “me first.” Given this finding, I rather doubt that Calvin would fit in as a good ant. :-)
AWWRIGHTTTTTT!!!!!!!!, Grazer, thanks for the info about your friends discovery(awesome acheivement BTW) and
4deerinmy yard, thanks for the link. Yes it is an awesome beautiful beast.
Have you ever trie to keep up with a child of Calvin’s imagination? I used to babysit for a woman who had seven children. The youngest boy had an imagination equal in spirit to Calvin’s. He kept me on my toes, but mom was too tired to try to keep up with him. he spent a lot of time in his room which only further fueled his imagination. It was easier for me to play into his fantasiedsbecause I wasn’t there 24/7, but when I was there several days in a row, he bagan to tax even my ability to keep up.
Mom asks so little of him, yet Calvin makes such a big deal of doing those things asked of him. I suppose I reacted the same, but without the vivid imagination
I like the laundry chute from our closet straight to the laundry room. Now, if I could only figure out how to have a chute from every closet… (And the way my husband likes to remove his socks & shirt in the living room, maybe one from there…)
Growing up we had a Laundry chute from the bathroom to the laundry room. Mom always wondered how the babysitter got us to pick up our dirty clothes, until the day I asked her “momma can you drop me down the chute after we put my clothes through?”
I bet Calvin would have enjoyed that.
I love the difference between Calvin’s inner world and his outer world: Ant Calvin hoisting an impossibly huge caterpillar and toting it back to the nest amid a host of other workers, and little boy Calvin with a load of dirty laundry all by himself.

Hmm, he showed more enthusiasm for the caterpillar.

He’s got high hopes. High apple pie in the sky hopes. Everyone knows an ant can’t … move a pile of laundry.

I’m with the mom on this one. Have you ever had to constantly pick up someone else’s stinky/smelly on-the-floor-for-a-week clothes? Go, mom!

Ants can carry up to 50 times their body weight. Not so poor little Calvin.

Everybody, for Grazer’s friend’s pet, google: Therizinosaur—Mystery of the Sickle-Claw Dinosaur. Pretty!

It’s sad that his mom never comes to recognise his creative abilities……

Of course it qualifies. The stuff isn’t hurting anything just sitting on the floor.

Mom, ants do a job of cleaning things up.

Gasp! Calvin’s mommy calls Calvin a slave! A child slave! Oh my goodness! Sighhhh!
Carmy, I am so glad I don’t have any kids! :-)

I wonder if my kids would be more enthusiastic about cleaning their rooms if they pretended they were ants.

Without the forethought of imagination we’d all be subservient to the Authoritarian.

BC13: Yes, it would make more sense. But since when does Calvin’s imagination make sense? It’s designed not to.
