We’re well into an era where even the most commonplace idioms are often twisted into something shady. As witness a couple of comments above.

I always use the human checkout now even for two items.
What’s a few minutes to help save a job; and as often as not, it’s as fast or faster than a self check that wants to card an 80-year-old for a bottle of wine.
I refuse to use the self-checkout lanes. The store can just go hire some more clerks, thank you very much!
