But if you send up all those rednecks with their guns, there’ll be a lot more things up there to shoot at – and a lot happier folks down here.

This is why women should be in charge of the Space Program. And everything else, too.

As a young man (overgrown kid) reading the Edgar Rice Burroughs "Moon Maid’ series, John Carter (hero and all around gentleman) would fight off the evil moon monsters with sword and ray gun, then take his beautiful green moon princess in his arms, and the scene would fade. You know what a young man (overgrown kid) thought they were doing. Well I won’t tell you but thank God Mom never came in.

Lew, I’ve read all the Burrough’s Mars books….Man are they cool! But Deja Thoris, the Princess of Mars, is a red Martian, Tars Tarkus is a green Martian…..the different life forms he dreamt up in those books have never been equaled in science fiction…Dude “populated” not only Mars, but Venus, (another series, check it out) and at least one moon…Great books!

I accompanied my granddaughters to the moon recently (they’re 4 and 5 years old). One of them got busy with the peanut and jelly sandwiches (gotta eat, you know) the other was more practical and wanted to know which jewelry to take and which outfit to wear.

Venus was okay. I liked the Mucker. Could only wade half way through the Tarzan series. His shorter works were better, but magazine serials paid the bills.

I don’t recall killing things as motivation for the moon landings. Beating the Russians, yes, but the idea that astronauts went to the moon to kill things is specious. Usually Wiley is pretty funny, but he whiffed this one.

Hello! FYI there are plenty of women (i.e. a majority) who are just fine at reading maps. I prefer maps to directions; truthfully whenever someone giving me a list of directions, I accidentally start zoning out (short attention span, apparently. I’m not proud of it.) Of course, these days everyone seems to be using their iPhone GPS apps to get places, so the whole “asking people for directions” thing seems to be phasing out. Requires too much verbal communication.

The reason we stopped going is because libs like Wiley thought it was a waste of money. Despite all the sciencew we gained spin off products and technology. By the the money was being spent on earth. Employing union workers to build spacecraft and boosters computers space suits equipment and supplies. Not mention technicians engineers, construction workers maintenance people janitors clerical staff etc thnat NASA employed.I’d rather see government money put into endeavors like this than paying people not work. Think of the thousands more who would be employed now if we were going full tilt on trips to Mars and beyond.BTW maybe not oil but there are lot of other resource on the Moon Mars and the Asteroids we could go after if we had the will.

@Dennis Willett As a card carrying liberal, leftist, socialist, apologist, whinger (I think I covered all the names the conservatives here like to trot out) I would love to see man still reach for the moon. We got so many wonderful technologies that spun off into the domestic market plus developed a better understanding of our world, solar system and universe. With current technology I believe it would be entirely feasible to have a self sustaining base located on the Lunar surface for long term research – akin to the international space station. From an established base we would be a giant step closer to manned missions to Mars and, from there, who knows what part of the Solar System would open up to us? How wonderful would it be for humankind to be pouring it’s money and energy in to space exploration and altruistic scientific endeavour – rather than working out better ways of killing each other and raping the planet?

This cartoon is a weapons-grade slap in the face to American men in general and American astronauts in particular…only the most rabid man-hater could draw something like this, or think that it’s funny.Right here we have yet another piece of evidence Wiley Miller should retire from cartoon.
