Opposable toes….just when I thought I’d thought of all the angles. I’m still working on why we have toenails, or should I say, their function? Must be like the appendix………

There are many more than “two things that separate the apes from the humans”! According to the Bible, we are made in God’s image, (not the ape’s image)! Of course, if you don’t want to believe the Bible, you have that option.

The bible’s a good work, no question, but God inspired more works than just that, including the Qoran, etc., and other people, too. He also set in motion everything we have, from the big bang on (not withstanding Steven Hawkins’ book) … leading to us, and likely we’re only a step in the evolution of something even greater. It’s hard to believe that such as we are the final step. We still think it’s okay to kill, for whatever reason, or to accumulate wealth at the expense of the “lesser” folks. I think going back just one step, to being one with opposible toes, we could move in a different direction and get a better result, and I think God would be much happier with the outcome of his invention. .

If I was allowed only ONE regret, it sure wouldn’t have anything to do with my TOES!

Opposable toes would be kinda cool. However, it would be rough buying shoes…

I remember an article years ago that claimed human superiority (sic) was due to us having opposable thumbs. Illustrating the point was a photo of a chimpanzee holding a telephone handset with its opposable big toe!

@hippogriff, of course, chimp toes (and thumbs) are not as fully opposable as human thumbs. And their toes do make walking less efficient–along with the shape of their knees, hips, and so on. Still, I can see Calvin’s point. Wouldn’t it be fun to be able to climb and swing through the trees so much better?

Rich Grise said, “Speaking of evolutionism vs. creationism, when you look at the Laws of Physics that the Big Bang (when God said, “Let there be Light”) has given us, then evolution is the only intelligent way to design a Universe. :-)”

Last I checked this was a Calvin & Hobbes forum, not a creationism vs. evolutionism debate.

While nails are the vestiges of claws we no longer use, imagine dropping something on your big toe without a nail, which hurts bad enough WITH one.

Calvin may not be concerned with swinging in trees, but more likely the additional things he could hold with his feet.

Seems that there has been some discussion of things vestigial such as our appendix. Turns out that that little jewel produces special bacteria necessary for proper function of our gut. It also turns out that the” vestigial” tailbone protects a nerve bundle which is responsible for keeping our anal aperture shut. Love the eggs, BTW…

Would have thought Calvin’s only regret was his involvement in the “Noodle Incident” - it seems to haunt his chances of getting decent Christmas presents from Santa EVERY year!

Best wishes to everyone for Easter, by the way

How nice of Mr. Watterson! That sale should greatly add to the Michael J. Fox foundation. And as I told Mr. Thompson earlier, I will keep him in my prayers and thoughts each day as I read his ABSOLUTELY delightful strip!

@Grog: Toes in the mouth is what all babies do when they are a few months old. I bought my camera when my nephew started doing that.

With age, we lose bot the desire and the flexibility it seems :-p
