In ages past, a “snow white” complexion was considered a sign of “beauty”, since it really meant that you were wealthy enough that you could avoid working outdoors in the sun. Today, a deep tan is considered “beautiful” for the same reason… it means that you’re wealthy enough to avoid indoor work and instead “relax” in the sun.
