Allen exemplifies what Jon Stewart put so exactly: Republicans don’t hate America. Republicans LOVE America: they just hate half the people who live there.
The catalog of people and places that should not be regarded as the ‘real America’ is, of course, quite long. And would probably be longer if the truth were known of the inner thoughts of some folks.
The GOP thinks America is a nation of small towns and farmers, even as the percentage of our people who live in rural districts slips below 20%. States like Montana and Wyoming are grossly over-represented in the Senate (talk about affirmative action and special privilege) and can quash legislation that makes little sense in the wide open spaces, but is certainly needed by the millions in places like New York City.
Real America is the America most Americans live in, and that is NOT the America of small towns and family farms. Norman Rockwell’s America survives and should be cherished, in the same way that other dwindling relics of the past ought to be cherished.
I live in such a place, and I like it there. I don’t want to have to join the swarming masses in a gridlocked city. But neither to I want the interests of that majority of my fellow countrymen to be sacrificed in the name of preserving traditional values.
Allen belongs in a glass case in a museum, with a label reading ‘Throwback.’
Even without the Macaca remark, Allen’s has about as much chance of beating Webb as the Cavs do of winning the NBA championship.
Have you forgotten that Veteran’s Relief bill of his? It’s almost unheard of for a first term Senator to get ANYTHING he proposes passed, much less something that big.
jmattadams is frustrated that only conservatives are saying insensitive and idiotic things. So he has a fantasy that Obama might do as badly, even it it’s only by accident in some foreign language. Problem is, Obama’s pretty smart, and is a civilized person, and idiotic hideous perjoratives just don’t come naturally to thoughtful people.
