At my old sledding hill, the bottom was situated so that going to the left would have you crash into a thorn bush, the right would send you into a stone wall, and the center would send you up over the wall for a six-foot drop.
And once again I draw attention to Watterson’s skill. Not only has he presented C&H as completely covered in snow, but he has portrayed their feelings through their posture, with almost no use of facial expression.
Hobbes is really looking forward to a tumble with the dryer. The dryer will knock him around a little, but he’ll come out of there snug as a bug in a rug and smelling like a rose.
We have a few hills in town but the one most used by parents for their kids is a perfectly safe straight run down about 100 yards with a wide open area at the bottom. after kids hit 5 they no longer want to go there as it’s boring.
I remember, as a kid in the 30s, our sledding hill was a road with very little traffic. But at the bottom of the hill the streetcar line crossed the road. I remember one kid going down the hill and just as he reached the bottom the trolley crossed the road and he went under it. Fortunately in those days the streetcars had a lot of clearance and he zipped under with no problem. His Guardian Angel sure saved him on that one!
The best hill we had started off very steep, then slowly leveled off for quite a ways. So, as soon as you pushed off, you were terrified for a bit, then had plenty of time to calm down…

Calvin’s dialogue in the last panel is something I will quote everywhere from now on.

when he turns back to toy mode in front of Calvin’s mother, Hobbes may have a tear or few that’ll need sewing

Growing up, I was almost at the top of the hill – the first slide down was easy; the second, not so much.

" You make everything sound so terrible. You should be glad we’re alive " is a phrase I’m going to use a lot this year.

What’s the difference between a realist and a pessimist? (hardly anything)

Our old sled run was on the 7th hole at the country club and ended in the middle of a frozen pond. Lucky to be alive, I suppose.

That’s a good metaphor for the year.

Neither one will have to worry about steering the sled unless one of them goes back and gets it. Neither one of them is pulling or carrying it.

Are they ghosts today? Neither is leaving any tracks in the snow.
