With all that’s going on, suddenly START is so important as to merit our efforts? What’s the point of lying to the Russians and having the Russians lie to us…?
Okay, Iran and Korea can’t have even ONE nuke without causing panic, and we have THOUSANDS and don’t want to cut back to a fewer few thousand, able to eliminate ALL LIFE ON EARTH -several (well many) times over, and reducing that number is “dangerous”???? Exactly how? Oh right, at several million dollars a copy, these weapons are a “cost savings” in defense- even though only used twice, against civilian populations, to show our “humanity”?
Habanero, it’s not “suddenly Start.” The issue has been on the table for more than 6 months, but the Republicans didn’t want their [No] votes to be used as a political issue in the November election, so they stalled it.
But if you’re serious about cutting into the deficit, this is a good place to ‘Start” spending cuts. (Pun intended) Many millions of dollars for maintenance and security can be saved by reducing the number of these surplus (i.e. more than we actually need) weapons. And since there will still be some 1500 weapons around to guard and tend to, no jobs are likely to be deleted. Let’s hear it for cutting spending!
START doesn’t change the “hearts” of Russian and Chinese leaders one bit. It only makes them laugh behind closed doors if we are the least bit serious.
There is really no reason to bring up Iran and North Korea, but apparently dtroutma thinks there is a reasonable stab at moral equivalency. More pathetic than humorous….
Poor GOP can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. The bleeep START treaty has been heard in committee, with bipartisan hearings and chances to amend, for months. The GOP’s whining about having to do things at the end of the session is all their own doing. Yeah, kid, international treaties don’t stop being needed just cuz you’ve been having a field day obstructing the normal business of Congress for two years. Cry babies.
^ Republicans should stop their pretend filibusters and let things go the floor for an up or down vote. The filibuster rules should go back to actually requiring a filibuster, the objecting member or members being required to stand up and explain why a bill shouldn’t come to the floor for a vote. GOP has made a mockery of the so-called deliberative body that the Senate is supposed to be. You can call it “caving” I call it democracy. Let them vote.

Of course, they could start working more and showing off less… I thought they were paid to pass laws, not grandstand for the cameras.

Well, here’s one for the books: Lisa Benson made a coherent statement.
If you know the “Santa Claus” you see at the mall, and if you know Republicans… neither kid is going to get what he wants. Not from him, anyway…

It’s only “suddenly START” if you watch Fox News.

@church, the START Treaty wasn’t a last minute push at all, as I and others have pointed out and provided details to support that fact.
I don’t know how many cloture votes he asked for, didn’t keep count. I believe the number of pretend filibusters by the GOP is about 89.

@ BCS - if the Democrats can push them to it, sure - but usually they are too afraid of the fillibuster.
