The ridges are a carry over of when coins were minted using actual precious metal. The practice of “clipping” coins was to carefully shave or clip some of the gold or silver off of the edge of the coin. So that the coin still had the denomination but was actually less valuable and the unscrupulous would pocket a bit for himself. The ridges prevents that practice. Of course it isn’t really needed now.

Proper English requires the phrase “one fewer ridge”.

So if it’s 700,000 daily, what is it per minute? It also never occurred to me that you can inhale your own skin particles.

According to Merriam Webster, less should be used in matters of degree, while fewer should be used for quantities.

That’s a good fact about quarters having plusser ridges than dimes.
Now I’ll be able to tell them apart.

But be prepared to get ugly comments from those behind you in the check-out line while you’re counting them!

You probably inhale nearly that many of other people’s skin particles.
