Do not forget Zaïre which later became the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997. Oh, and the Federal Republic Germany and German Democratic Republic until the reunification in 1990.

I don’t know when Ceylon ceased to be Ceylon but I first heard of it in the pages of “Air International”in the early ’70s. They kept talking about some little place called Sri Lanka but it was a couple years later that I found out where that was. I thought it was probably some tiny country in Africa. And, in a weirdly related subject, I still call Burma, Burma.

Heck, even the planets have changed since I was a kid. Bummer about the canals on Mars.

Then there’s Dahomey (now Benin) and Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso).

Most of the countries are still where they always were. In most cases, just the names have changed, going back to what the people who live there call them, instead of some Anglicized tag from the colonial era.

Er, there are some Human Rights Organizations that not only still call it Burma, but want the government that forced the name change to Myanmar removed

So it’s not just me—A few years ago I took a course offered at a local school to catch up on these things, and now they have changed more country’s names.

I’m showing signs of pluggishness. The countries my parents were born in no longer exist, though the towns do, whereas my birth country still exists, but not the town. Who am I? I’m pluggered if I know!
