When I joined the Puslinch Lake water-ski club, everyone had nicknames. One member was called Pit. Eventually, I asked how he got his nickname. It was explained that it was obvious: His last name was Armstrong; that soon became Army; that soon became Armpit; and that finally shortened up to Pit.

That’s the curse of having a short, one syllable first and last name. Very few nicknames evolve.

A nickname is usually earned, and usually without the total agreement of the receiver.

My-nickname came about early in life, through a mis-pronunciation of my-last name. It stuck with me thru my working life, and for the final-job, of nearly 30-years—-working with the same-employer!—-I was known to EVERYONE, as “Bruno”. No big deal, except came time for retirement. Found out my-actual name of Richard was NEVER on the company’s payroll listing! (Had always went with Direct-Deposit, and never saw an-actual check, so to speak!) Lots of explaining, on the EMPLOYERS’-part, since my-Social Security number WAS-correct, to a-T! Anyways, after all was said and done, and straightened-out? It was funny! But, damned if they didn’t suddenly start speaking to me as a complete-stranger, every time I’d meet any of ’em in public, anymore…???☺
