There were no Sunday strips in 1997, and started again in 1998, though GoComics hasn’t been running them, so far, at Stone Soup Classics. Yesterday’s strip there was from 2/19/98. For whatever reason, the last 3 January strips are missing from the archive (an Overboard strip shows instead); the Sunday strips preceding yesterday’s from the archive are:
Maybe GoComics will start including them in the Classics; but, if it doesn’t, you can see them by clicking the date under the strip here, which will show an interactive calendar (the Classics calendar showing strips begins 10/19/15).
I remember those days. When husband was working long hours, I wait over hour sitting in living room and reading a book, occasional I check to see if he stopped buzzing, nope so I wait longer, back then we had 3 bedrooms and boy and girl. Then when I had surgery taking pain medication I fall asleep in afternoon so did not like, and at night I am up until 3 a.m. after giving up at midnight and go living room to read a book. Husband got a lot of sleep. If caffeine was around I would not sleep at all until next day. So no caffeine or chocolate for me. I wished I had in bed a sturdy headboard and reading lamp as Joan but then the light would wake husband up so I sit in the living room. I could read a lot of pages; whereas husband perhaps got up a couple of times to sit with me when I go back to bed so he sleep then I get up and read.
Top of the list: don’t spend your time reading a screen just before you settle down. It’s been shown that the light tends to reset your body clock and keep you awake.

how long until Joan’s iPad’s battery runs down or her nightstand’s lamp’s bulb burns out?

Try Stephen King’s book, Insomnia and see if that helps!

Love the subtle shading in the inset, showing Joan reading under light, and Wally sleeping in relative darkness

She’s a slow reader. She’s been on that article all year.
