The joey is stretching her/his head out to feel the wind in his/her face! Just like a dog would do! As you can’t truly tell whether the joey is a male or female (or Ramone!), I’ve switched between those possessives. At the very least, one can easily tell that the joey is riding in Mum’s pouch. Male kangaroos don’t have pouches, unless you’d consider a scrotum to be a pouch.
