I’m a 4th generation Navy wife, but not a Gold Star family member, so I can’t speak from that direct experience. However, If one of my sons had followed their forefathers’ to the Naval Academy and into active duty and the worst possible mother’s fear happened, I would NOT WANT THAT CRETIN TO CALL ME.

He was too busy yelling at the TV, then had to go play a round of golf. He just didn’t have the time to call her.

There just might be fewer of those calls if.. you were not engaged in trying to be the worlds policeman.

As a veteran who was served on many burial details, and as a son who has had that folded flag handed to me, I cannot imagine the pressure that the president must be under when making that call. I’m not trying to stand up for him, he knew what he was doing when he took the job. And all you folks that voted for him, this is YOUR fault. Because you knew what you were doing when you voted for him. You can say, “Yeah, but Hillary” all day, it doesn’t change a thing. Trump has no idea what he’s doing. He’s lost.

Traditionally (before low cost international telephones), it is the duty of the company commander (captain) to write a letter of condolence and notification of details, plus a visit by the nearest base chaplain and one other officer to present the basic notification in person. Perhaps if the president were to be given this duty, a lot fewer lives would be wasted in national posturing.

When a guy, or a president, keeps showing you who he is, believe him.

If a country killed my son, I wouldn’t be cuddling its flag.

You well captured the loss, the waiting, the sadness — oh, and the fool.

Definitely cruel and unusual punishment to get a call from Trump. However, unless very special circumstances, and pre-arranged calls after some time for grieving has passed, the POTUS should only send a letter. A phone call puts the family on the spot, and if it happens, it should be kept PRIVATE!!
