He has the empathy of a slug. That poor woman, I know that it’s hard to find words to console someone whose grief must be so deep that words sometimes seem to make the grief harder. Sometimes the person who’s grieving just needs to know that you really care that they are grieving. What Trump said to that woman had about as much empathy and sympathy as he would have had for a tree being cut down to be used for firewood. He would have been better off to have let his secretary write a letter and make the phone call than by doing it himself because he has absolutely no Talent OR empathy to console anyone. I come from a military family. My father was in both World War II and the Korean action. I don’t remember World War II but I remember my dad coming home from Korea. And I remember my mom’s grief for the whole time that he was gone and I remember her Joy when he came home, alive. And I can imagine what it would have been like if he hadn’t come home. So maybe what Trump is lacking is the ability to put himself in someone else’s shoes. My sympathy for the families who lost their sons or fathers or brothers lies in my heartfelt sorrow of what you must be feeling right now. There are not now or never can be any words that will make it less. Only that your sorrow is shared by all of us.
Trump’s insensitive comment to the bereaved wife reminds me of a funeral I once attended in an Episcopalian church. My friend’s husband had unexpectedly committed suicide, and the minister’s sermon included, “Although his last act will exclude him from Heaven, he was a husband and father. We should gather around those he left behind on earth and in the hereafter.”
My friend never again set foot in her church home.
Trump would be at home in that church. .. .as long as the minister would keep from criticizing him.
