While the mostly white religious right was gaining political and cultural power over the last 40 years, evangelicalism became as much a political and racial identity as a religious or theological one.

@masterlrain…the real difference between trump and pence is stark. Pence is delusional in an accepted fashion—he is a right wing conservative “Christian” and carries all the usual nonsense stemming from those beliefs. There are millions and millions of these folks. They have a set of beliefs that have been deemed “normal” in our society. And, in truth, the vast majority of these people mean well and many of them are kind, thoughtful, and try to do the right thing.

Pence’s Christianity is a bit on the extreme side, of course, and I find that repugnant, but his beliefs are shared by millions of my fellow citizens, and I respect them along with the other belivers. Matters of politics aside, on balance, the Christian part of this equation is troubling in some ways, but not terribly troubling.

However, trump is mentally ill, and we ignore the compulsive nature of his disorder at our peril. The thing is, we really don’t want to admit that we elected someone so terribly mentally ill to the presidency. What does it say about us as a people that we cannot even recognize such extreme behaviors as only coming from a truly mentally disturbed individual? Why is the obvious so hard to see? The danger is that we think there’s a method to the madness apart from the madness itself. That trump, in some way not yet demonstrated, is, as jlocke asserts, playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. This is observably not true. The compulsive nature of the man is visible, transparent, even.

Poor pathetic trump has no sense of right and wrong. No conscience. Is completely amoral. Lies with every statement in an unprecedented way. His malignant narcissism is just that. His ADD just “adds” to the mix, making him volatile and compulsive. This is not politics. This is a mental disorder. Not senility. A profound sickness. This illness doesn’t absolve him from responsibility, however. It is not his fault he’s sick. But he is completely responsible for everything he does.

Would you rather be screwed over by a madman or a religious fanatic?

For all the hatred of Adolph Hitler, without him there may not be a current Israel, the U.S. might not be the world power it is today as Europe would not have lost its industrial facilities allowing America to fill the void. We might not have gone to the moon and a host of other outcomes from having WWII.

Might Trump and conservatives force another societal shift?

I think the big difference between Trump and Pence is that Trump is a better showman than Pence by orders of magnitude. Trump could get re-elected in 2020. I don’t think Pence could. No charisma to get supporters to the polls. Nor do I think Pence could get his religious agenda into action or would be as destructive on foreign policy as Trump with his white nationalist agenda and abrogation of treaties and agreements. I’d guess that an Article 25 removal would leave us a bit better off than we are now.

Nice to see Denny “kiddie diddler” Hastert in a prominent place.

Pence in his short tenure as VP has not had many opportunities to lie,

but he has absolutely made the most of every opportunity.
