Kudos to Greg for sparing us the cost/benefit analysis portion of the conversation. At some point, they have to know all the options, including Do Nothing.

I don’t know where I would come up with that much money if the surgery was for me

Told I guy I worked with that my wife’s nasty little rat of a minature schnuauzer had swallowed a needle & thread, costing me &750 for surgery on a “dog” I hadn’t wanted in the first place. He replied “I’ve never paid a vet a cent; a .22 shell is a lot cheaper”. (Tempting option for the rodent, but I was stuck, the wife & kids adored his stinking little hide…..)

He used to think only the dog could do those eyes.

OK is the right answer, after all he’s a member of the family.

JOHNSULLIVAN1 — actually my dog wouldn’t make it with only three legs. She’s 17.5 years old and needs all the support she can get!!!

18 years ago I got a call from my wife while I was at work:Wife, “Don’t be angry” (first words out of her mouth when I answered the phone"Me, “Ummm, why would I be angry?”“’Cuz I just spent $350” (We lived on a very tight budget at the time“Annnd, why did you spend so much money?”In a jumbled rush she answered, “Because I saw a kitten in the middle of the highway and I stopped to rescue him and blocked traffic and he’d been hit so I took him to a vet and he had a broken leg that had to be set in a cast but he’s okay and we’re home now.”“Oh, okay, no worries!”

He is now the elder statesman of our clowder, but arthritis from that injury, which, it turned out, had also damaged a couple of vertebrae, makes it painful for him to walk. Not sure how long he’ll hang on but so far he’s doing fair – and he has always adored my wife. He was not our first rescue, nor our last.
