As long as the lunatics at the NRA offices keep funneling money to congressmen nothing will be accomplished. The casualty lists will continue to mount because of these sick, twisted people.

Should have used Templeton Prize. Nobel is for real science, not fantasy. ;-)

Bob666: The Nobel Peace Prize is not for science, and was not part of the original prize areas designated by Nobel. And they have indulged in Fantasy as well. Like Obama’s prize before he even took office. (And no, I am not an Obama basher. I just think such a prize is for accomplishment, not for not being George W. Bush.)

But the toon does say “the new prize for miracles,” which implies it isn’t science based, just as with the Peace prize (or the Templeton Prize, even if they do like to award to scientists who express a positive attitude toward religion.)

We can do this. As long as there is a second amendment, people have the right to own and bear arms. I also believe that some people do need the protection that bearing a gun confers.

However, consider the following: a national registry database of all guns. People can only own so many weapons and only certain types. If you want more or to own automatic weapons, you can apply for status as a firearms collector. However, this means additional background checks.

Also you have to recertify that you own the weapons every year, and once every three years present the weapon for inspection to make sure it has not been modified and that you still have it in your possession. Reporting lost or stolen weapons is mandatory.

To sell a weapon, would be like selling a car. Both parties have to sign the title so it can be transferred over in the database.

Likewise, sales of ammunition would also be tracked in the database. Even if you are a firearms collector, there is no reason for you to be using thousands of rounds a week.

These measures won’t stop the patient and determined person, but it would make it more difficult and time-consuming to amass and arsenal: maybe enough time to cool off or at least get the authorities’ attention.

This needs to be done on a national level and not piecemeal by state. Are you listening, Congress?

That will end up being a mass shooter. The question is how many people have to die before we can have a rational discussion with the right-wing “collectors”

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Nope. No mention of ammunition.

We don’t need to depolarize attitudes. The overwhelming majority of Americans support common-sense gun control laws. What we need is to break our legislators loose from the thrall of the gun lobby.
