The “debt limit” is an idiotic joke. Just inflation, let alone idiotic spending on “defense”, makes it an impossible feature, government, or a business that has any intent to grow or survive, and provide for the constitutancy, as in taxpayers.
Ms Benson should also note that EVERY time the US has approached its Debt Limit, the limit has been raised… and that’s happened Over 100 TIMES! Every time!
When something like that happens so regularly and predictably, the need for it becomes negligible by any kind of rationality.
Also, note that, of the hundreds of countries on this planet, only THREE or so even HAVE ‘debt limits.’ The US is one of them… the other two are flyspecks of GDP in comparison.
Critical Thinking dictates that we don’t need it and its only purpose is for Washington, D.C., politicians to get publicity, visibility and do some grandstanding over it.
Get used to it, Ms. Benson. With the new tax cuts the Republicans are cooking up, the national debt is just going to rise as there is only so much funding the working taxpayers can come up with.
Oh yes a debt ceiling! Let’s raise the debt ceiling and spend more money on military spending. But just to show that our hearts in the right place let’s have tax cuts for the Rich and Famous. The reprehensible repubs want you to know they’re thinking about us, so they’re going to try and convince us that the new tax plan is going to be good for us, that some of that tax cut is going to put more money in our pockets. Do you believe that?
What the dirt bags really want is a balanced budget amendment to the Constituition, so that Defense and Corporate subsidies (while paying no taxes) eat the whole budget. Congress will just adjorn, as they would be hopelessly deadlocked, except on their pay and work days (3) per year.
The debt limit is an artificial construct that only serves to give congress a feeling of being responsible for the debts that they have already incurred via passed legislation. Imagine the reaction of your bank of your bank if you told them that you wouldn’t pay your credit card bill because doing so would violate your own debt ceiling. Congress should try doing something sensible like considering where the money will come from before authorizing any expenditure. In the meantime both congress and Trump should stop all travel by themselves.

The money has already been spent by Congress, if anything Trump would be on the side of stiffing people.

Apparently, Benson just doesn’t understand the role of “Government” in our 21st Century economy.

Conservatives are only fiscally conservative when it comes to spending money on someone other than them. Wars? Tax cuts for the rich? No problem.
