Very true. Interstates are for getting to the area you want to explore.

to borrow from Charles Kuralt “Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel across the country from coast to coast without seeing anything.” —

Interstates have turned into 4+ lanes of racetracks, with idiot drivers.

The best trips we’ve taken have been when we actively avoided the interstates and found little towns, lighthouses, local museums and diners, etc.

We have had riotous good times wandering the back roads.

Amen to all your comments, and Pluggers! When I traveled from central Colorado to western Missouri to visit a friend what could be done in a long day of driving would take me at least three. Sometimes I found myself in Oklahoma, sometimes Nebraska. I made lots of stops in antique shops, museums and ‘points of interest’. Love the old Federal highway system.

One year we went from Southern California to Florida off the freeways. Best trip we ever had!

@ ODD DOG: that would take some doing as a lot of it is simply gone.
