Sorry, but as much as I dislike the confederate battle flag being displayed by radical nuts, many of those statues of generals etc were of war heros on the losing side. It’s history that we don’t need to destroy. Instead, we should look upon slavery as the worst of all worlds, and that history should remain as a reminder. Sherman wasn’t exactly a nice guy either, nor was Custer, who got his at the Little Big Horn.
First of all, the reason there are Confederate statues all over the country is because of the tireless efforts of the Daughters of the Confederacy to promote the false “Lost Cause” Myth, which denied the fact that slavery was the cause of the Civil War and promoted the South as noble heroes, which they decidedly were not, whatever their bravery on the battlefield. By that standard, there is no need to have statues memorializing them.
Second of all, if we want to talk about them, so be it. There’s plenty of history about these people. We are NOT erasing history here — that’s what the Daughters of the Confederacy were doing WITH these statues — we are correcting it. We can have the statues placed in museums with the fuller history described, which is in fact the plan. As it is, the statues in and of themselves send a message.
Third of all, the quotation attributed to US Grant is completely false. There is NO SUCH QUOTATION. We only have some evidence that he FREED a slave that was probably acquired from his slaveowning father-in-law. Grant made huge efforts to employ people of color in the government, and indeed the US Government was one of the few places that was nearly color-blind — until Woodrow Wilson started segregating again. Furthermore, Grant OWNED NO SLAVES during the Civil War. (https://pastexplore.wordpress.com/2015/06/29/did-ulysses-s-grant-own-slaves-during-the-civil-war/)
We can acknowledge history without glorifying a false one. The first monument they removed was explicitly about "white supremacy, and in case you think that is just an expression, see for yourself: http://gawker.com/new-orleans-which-still-has-a-white-league-monument-m-1728462618
When they found that they could educate people in falsehoods and they liked it they created a bubble. One where they need to continue to make it grow till it encompasses the most powerful country on Earth. They want it to be White Christian and Confederate with all those supremacist ideas of the past and present fused into an eternal now. They would have gladly had the USA join the Axis powers if they could. There were many similarities and overlapping of ideas and operations between the two. Both Union and Confederate for the white racists. They still want this country. Don’t let them have it.

Dtroutma – I agree. I had a professor that correctly said "history is written by the winners.

The cartoon loaded slowly, with the top half showing first. I looked at it and thought, “That doesn’t look like Trump”.
