Steve Miller Band: Per www.songfacts.com The word “Pompatus” does exist in the Oxford English Dictionary, and it means “to act with pomp and splendor.” Miller most likely heard the word on a song called “The Letter,” which was recorded by the Los Angeles Doo-Wop group The Madallions in 1954.

I’m still trying to figure out what it has to do with “Maurice”!

The great singer Maurice Chevalier was a noted film lover but I’ve never understood any of the song so I doubt that was the Maurice intended!

In the Latin language, pompatus is an actual word meaning “done with pomp or splendor”. It is the masculine perfect participle of the Latin root word pompo.

Good song. Always fun to see Baby rocking out to music, too.
