In the life cycle of the mayfly their winged form for mating is the shortest lived. However their underground existence can be for years. Similar to cicada.
When I lived in Virginia they called Mayflies flying teeth! They could bite you and be gone before you knew it. Glad they only live a day. Glad we don’t have them in the PNW.
