Hilburn gets my guffaw for a good one here, but rates a thumbs-down for perpetuating the myth that the Biblical record says anything about them sleeping in a stable. Odds are, the happy couple camped in a pasture on the outskirts of Bethlehem and grabbed whatever corn crib was handy — well, it’s Palestinian equivalent, anyway — for the little JC to nap in. (If you’ve never slept on a straw mattress, they’re heaven.)
The barn would also have been warm. Also, it probably was part of the house, not a separate building and remember that Mary had to give birth there so being with the animals would have given her privacy as well as a warm place. The manger (feeding trough) would be a nice cosy place for a new born baby.
Weather forecast for Jerusalem, Israel, 2016 Dec. 25, calls for a low of 42° and a high of 49°. Yup, just the sort of weather that’s ideal for long journeys to fill out census forms.
