Many vets such as me believe in what he’s doing. America is about freedom from being shot while black! And don’t tell me about GANGS in Chicago! COPS ARE NOT GANG MEMBERS!
The only change Kaepernick is going to see is in his Popularity and in his wallet. I love how he says the U.S. is so racist, but go to another country and he will not like some of their attitudes.
I vaguely recall having read a Miss Manners column about National Anthem etiquette. The rules, as I recall, are these:1. If the National Anthem of another country is played, one stands to respect the citizens of that country.2. If the National Anthem of one’s own country is played, one stands and sings along.
If only it was some white ranchers trying to steal Federal land. Then they’d get a respectful audience. Otherwise, just remember: Those aren’t USIN’ freedoms. They’re LOOKIN’ freedoms.
Since you’re bringing vets into this, Mr. Varvel…[]http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/patriots/2016/08/31/service-members-come-out-support-colin-kaepernick-protest/axsKZ3Jhlz8ZsriFkLFpIL/story.html[]They’ve even created a Twitter hastag, #veteransforkaepernick[]But then Republicans have always been screaming hypocrites when it comes to respecting veterans Frinstance, they lose it when Obama salutes a pair of Marines while holding a cup of coffee…and then just GUSH over their he-ro Donald Trump, when he slanders a gold-star family and disparages John McCain’s war record..
@braindead“especially a black someone, not allowed even to notice injustice, let alone protest it?” Nicely noted. Kaepernick’s not white, so the conservative view is that he should not exercise his First Amendment rights. Similarly, the rabid believers in the Second Amendment said nothing when two innocent black citizens were killed because they were carrying (legal and licensed) guns. Looks like both sets of rights are just for white folks: “blacks need not apply.” (And just to further confound the right-wing trolls here: I happen to be white, employed, and relatively wealthy….and I still think that what I wrote is valid.)
To be fair, the conservatives will almost always be outraged by improper salute, or failure to salute, and they’ll use whatever they can to lash out at their target. When the target is nonwhite, though, their vocabulary starts to tend toward nakedly ugly racial epithets (though some will be careful to use dogwhistle racial epithets, and still others will avoid outright racist terminology while still suggesting that the target of their wrath has let us all down after we were so nice to put them in a position of visibility).
Thanks to all who have sacrificed for the freedom that makes this country great, despite the fascists who would undermine our Constitution by demanding phony obedience and flag worship. Even Varvel’s unpatriotic drivel deserves the protection of our First Amendment.
The MAN is exercising his 1st Amendment Rights. You assholes don’t listen to the Black Man on the street. Maybe you’ll listen to a NFL Player. But then you only like all the lies and yelling at a Trump rally..but they are also exercising their 1st Amendment rightsYou don’t get to pick and choose who has more rights than anyone else. Maybe you should READ THE CONSTITUTION. Bigots NEVER get it!
And the guy in the wheelchair volunteered to go to another country and slaughter their inhabitants for money. That “just following orders” thing didn’t work that well for the Nazi’s.

he sits on his fat wallet (football player) and complains on how bad blacks are treated

Seems to be kind of a mediocre player anyway. Maybe the 49ers will cut him from the roster. Of course, it’ll be ‘raaaaacism’.

Spoken like a true Trumpeteer. Your (typical RWNJ) bigotry is showing. Thanks for helping to prove RHC is right about Trump supporters.

Neither the Pledge of Allegiance nor the National Anthem is mandatory to honor it. Or freedom is only good unless you approve of it.

Of course Varvel is obviously not educated enough to know which group never stands when the National Anthem is played…

Once again, respect the ideal of the country, and work to overcome the imperfections of those who live her. Don’t just sit there, do something.
