The other evening during dinner we watched our neighbor’s cat playing with a squirrel. You could tell they were playing; the squirrel came so close to the cat a number of times & wasn’t doing their angry chatter and tail-flip, and the cat wasn’t even running, but doing more of a “jog” in chasing the squirrel. It was a riot to see.
My Mom’s cat (back went animals were fenced in as much) would see a dog and pretend it was unaware. It would wander around, tail and head up, facing away from the dog. When the dog spotted it & came running, her cat would spring up in the air at the last moment, coming down on the dog’s back, digging in all it’s claws. The only time it ever stalked around like that was after spotting a dog, and staking around where the dog was sure to see it, but always acting as though unaware of the dog. Eventually dogs would avoid the neighborhood, so the cat went elsewhere to play its cruel trick on unsuspecting dogs that thought they had found a dumb cat.
My dog and cats get along pretty well, but the fear between them is still there. All my cats and dogs have gotten along pretty well, but there will always be that, “hey you’re a dog/cat …” sort of feelings towards each other, I guess because the history of their wild cousins.
Snoopy, if you are afraid of the cat next door wait until you meet Garfield or Heathcliff.

One of our cats had the neighbor’s beagle pretty intimidated, years ago. She would never actually attack, just stalk him very slowly and menacingly.

I’ve seen a tiny 6lb cat throw herself at a doberman with all four sets of claws fully extended. Sent that big loud dog running for cover.
