Just read a column by one of our local sportswriters the other day positing that baseball could well benefit from younger kids shying away from football. It’s not unreasonable to think other sports might also benefit. Personally, football’s been my favorite sport for a long time (part due to how lousy the Royals played for a long time, part bitterness at the strike wiping out the World Series, part just because I like football.) Doesn’t mean I don’t recognize the health issues, of course.

    Don’t tell beviek that !

Seriously, parents that think that steering their kid away from football or hockey ( where you are at least wearing protective gear ) doesn’t mean that a kid can’t/won’t sustain a sports injury.

When I was playing soccer in college, one of my teammates died in a freak accident on the soccer pitch – during practice ! He was all alone – no other player contact – when he slipped on the moist grass, fell and struck his head on a very small rock in the field. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died.

You just never know and you can’t keep kids in a bubble. My attitude was that sports for kids are games for kids. If the want to play, let them. If they don’t want to play a sport, don’t push them to, Kids are not the extension of your own ego !

LinguistPadding can be a mixed blessing. Anyone have per capita, per level figures on permanently disabling injury figures between US football and hockey on one hand (padded), and Australian Rules and Rugby on the other (minimal padding)?
