What we need is to get the lobbyists in healthcare conglomerates and the pharmaceutical industry out. There is no good reason why we are paying 4 to 10 times as much for the medications as other nations for the same products being sold and manufactured by the same companies. There is also a ridiculous price mark up on durable medical goods and the cost of treatment being pocketed by the corporate owned hospital system. In regards to the VA yes they suck almost every doctor I see is from the middle east and you are left wondering if they can actually practice at any place other than the VA because they seem uncaring inept and don’t listen to the patient you get a lot of uh huh, yes yes, well ok see you in 6 months. I have to go to a doctors office out side in the community to get decent care at a higher cost.
Universal healthcare takes both major marketing dollars and several multiple million dollar salaries out of the equation. With a home or a car you have a reasonable idea of how much insurance you need. Anyone who thinks they know how what their needs are for health is pipe dreaming. Everyone paying into one pot helps us all.
Arizona has the distinction of having the first county in the United States to put its population in a position of not being able to get Obama Care. It seems that Aetna, the only in exchange provider, is pulling the plug because of $$$$$$$$$$$ loss. In doing so, the good folks will be put in the position of not only having no Affordable Care Act insurance, but also being liable for the $7XX.XX annual tax for not having qualifying health insurance………….. Who knew??????
If there were no political ideologies to be satisfied, and our representative were public servants; wouldn’t it be in their best interests to work together to get us a single payer system so we would keep them in office? Too bad they have other motivations?
Single payer will work. It has in many first world countries.Ain’t it kinda funny how so many people from single-payer first-world countries come to this backwater place to get their medical care?
The profits for Aetna rose from $1.9 billion in 2013 to $2.3 billion in 2015, obviously the ACA wasn’t hurting. The Aetna CEO was praising the ACA just a couple of months ago. Then, the Justice Department rejected the planned Aetna-Humana merger. It is safe to assume that Aetna is pulling out of the ACA as retaliation for the merger rejection.
The US has a better rating than Cuba …“Some people fancy all health care debates to be a case of Canadian Health Care vs. American. Not so. According to the World Health Organization’s ranking of the world’s health systems, neither Canada nor the USA ranks in the top 25.”http://thepatientfactor.com/canadian-health-care-information/world-health-organizations-ranking-of-the-worlds-health-systems/
Okay, I know this is a political cartoon, but there are a few practical things that bother me. First of all… 911 is never called from an ER! 911 (that is, the emergency response system) brings patients INTO the ER. True, transfers are arranged for critical patients to get them to a higher level of care FROM an ER sometimes, but this is not through the 911 system.
Secondly, if there’s that much blood around, this doc is not wearing adequate PPE (personal protection equipment), specifically he needs a splash shield on his facemask.
I could nitpick on other things, but after all it IS a cartoon, so I’ll let it go at that.
Also a political comment… while Obama Care may have its share of problems, and I’m not qualified to speak on that, one good thing it has done for emergency departments is help decrease the typically large volume of no-pay patients that are written off as charity care (and thus paid for by the other patients that do pay, or have insurance).
After laying in the street dying of pre-existing conditions, Obama has finally got the Healthcare system to the ER. Now the patient is bleeding out and we need help. We need the congress to do its job and save this, figure out how to make it better and enact laws to get us back to having health care so we can go about our business. Great, healthcare is in “trouble” (as it has been for 8 years that you hated it) so what is the answer?
I grew up in the US and I had a lot of experience with the US health system, or lack of system, and then in 1995 after I finished graduate school I got a job in Canada and I’ve lived there ever since, so I have a lot of experience with the Canadian system as well. I would certainly not say that the Canadian system is perfect, but overall I am much happier with the Canadian system. Everyone is treated pretty much equally, and no one has to fear the costs of health care. I have found that I get timely treatment, and I have seen that those who have serious medical needs get treated right away. Wait times for some procedures are too long, however. I don’t have personal experience of any of the European systems, so I can’t speak about them. Personally, I think the US should try to depoliticize the problem. The system before Obamacare wasn’t working, and Obamacare certainly needs to be improved.Take a good hard look at the various systems that are in use and pick the one that makes the most sense for the US.
The REAL reason that Aetna is backing out of the healthcare exchanges, DOJ blocked their merger with Humana. https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/now-know-real-reason-aetna-132900946.html
Many people in this country are one heart attack away from being homeless. This was true before Obamacare. It is true now. Every industrialized country except the US has universal health care. All systems have flaws. But we are exceptional, aren’t we? Can we not examine all the systems that are in place, implement the good parts, and work to minimize the bad ones? And for those who point to VA as not working, I do agree. This has less to do with the setup and more to do with the lack of responsibility and accountability of those in charge (including Congress). If the American people assume that the government will always screw things up, therefore we must live with it, more than health care will go down the sewer. If we allow slack behavior, we deserve it.
Simply put, the only money the “lost” is the difference between what they made in profit compared to what they EXPECTED to make with the write – in guarantee of profit the Republicans inserted.

Replace the word “Obamacare” with “Future of the GOP” and you would have a REAL cartoon.
