He’s totally pro-Civil Rights now. He’s like… totally done a 180 on preaching that marriage equality will destroy the country. I totally believe he’s genuine now. I saw it in his tears.

That said, it’s a free country and he can continue to do what he wants… it provides more entertainment for me from the Daily Show.

I suspect – correct me if I’m wrong – that I’m the only poster on this list who actually knew Dr. King. I was trained by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. The idea that Dr. King would have supported Glen Beck is ludicrous. I’m not saying he would have been happy with today’s “civil rights” leadership – but that’s a different question. Congressman John Lewis was one of the heroes of the movement – is he supporting Glen Beck? Does Bob Moses? Does Bernard Lafayette?

sigh. i met Dr. King, and ate at a MacDonald’s with his bunch one afternoon. he had a very profound agenda, and was very driven. but not the ‘Icon” all the DownTrodden people thought he was. he was a very good con-artist, and was skilled at shaving sheep. but he WAS a phony. a disgusting person, and a good companion to jesse jackson. don’t even bring him into the discussion.

Dr. King had his faults – the younger people in SNCC used to call him “De Lawd” because he tended to be be pompous – but he was a great leader. But it’s not Dr. King who is in question here – and that’s why I mentioned John Lewis and Robert Moses and Bernard Lafayette – I could go on with many more names, but these three I happen to know are still alive and doing good work. Their positions would be worth knowing about. I doubt they would accept Glen Beck as the modern manifestation of the civil rights movement.

A frequent answer (see Pelosi) made to those opposing the proposed “Mosque” is that the 1st amendment protects freedom of religion and they have the perfect right to build it and it is un-American to even speak out in opposition.

Well if that is true than all of you opposing Beck’s right of free speech, also 1st amendment- are equally un-American. You are not allowed to oppose his 1st amendment rights.

You can’t have it both ways.

^ Of course I believe you and everyone else has the perfect right to verbally oppose Beck and his meeting. But I also believe everyone has the right to oppose the building of a Muslim community center or Mosque.

Many on the left have spoken out against this right of free speech in opposition to the Mosque. That was my point.

I don’t speak for others, but I certainly did not suggest, nor do I believe, that Beck should not be allowed to speak. I haven’t posted about the Mosque (or whatever it is), because I think it’s an issue that should not waste the time of rational adults, but if you ask, I’d say of course people have the right to oppose the mosque (or whatever it is). People should have the right to say all kinds of stupid things.

If there are those on the left who say that Beck should not be allowed to speak, I think they are making a big mistake. Can you point to posts that have said so? I don’t see any on this thread – which begins with Jade saying “it’s a free country and he can continue to do what he wants… it provides more entertainment for me from the Daily Show.” That’s one person on the left side (I hope Jade doesn’t mind if I say that) who says Beck has a right.

I’m interested in Beck’s religion…is it LDS… FLDS? Is he going to endorse Romney for the church when the time comes? Are there two Bibles? IS salt lake city where jesus lives? This country is wandering in darkness when we follow a church orchestrated manipulater like Beck and his hommies.

And, it’s said the location of the ISLAMIC CULTURAL CENTER is in bad taste. Beck’s ignorance to the hallowed ground and date of civil right’s history is insulting.

^ bruce, what does tolerance mean? Beck puts himself in the public eye in a pretty forceful (if not outrageous) way, and he’s got to expect a little criticism. If he can’t stand the heat, he should stay out of the kitchen. He called Obama a racist, after all, so perhaps he has defined for himself the kind of language he finds acceptable.

Again, he’s free to do what he wants to do, and people are free to make jokes about it. I personally just see it all as a way to get attention, and as a professional entertainer that’s probably all he cares about (especially since his viewership tanked not too long ago).

Again, he’s said he’s pro-Civil Rights, he’s done an about-face “on TV” from saying marriage equality will destroy the nation, but then he’s got Ms. King up there, who, ironically, though she claims to be for Civil Rights, is all about suppressing the rights of others, often for the same reasons her own rights were suppressed; religious interpretation.

It’ll be on the Daily Show. I’m more interested in the grilling this ex-Bush guy who just came out is going to get.

“Put Ellen Degeneres, Rosie O’Donnell, Al Sharpton and / or Jesse Jackson on the stage it will further the racial tensions. But that is OK with the liberals due to the double standard.”

I must’ve missed the “Liberal” news entertainment rallies scheduled to take place on 8/28 in recent years. Double standards are only acceptable if they’re Biblical or Constitutional double-standards, though, so I see your point

Things Obama has actually been quoted on about gay marriage:

Opposes CA Prop. 8, one-man-one-woman marriage. (Jul 2008) Being gay or lesbian is not a choice. (Nov 2007) Decisions about marriage should be left to the states. (Oct 2007) Homosexuality no more immoral than heterosexuality. (Oct 2007) Ok to expose 6-year-olds to gay couples; they know already. (Sep 2007) Has any marriage broken up because two gays hold hands? (Aug 2007) We need strong civil unions, not just weak civil unions. (Aug 2007) Legal rights for gays are conferred by state, not by church. (Aug 2007) Disentangle gay rights from the word “marriage”. (Aug 2007) Gay marriage is less important that equal gay rights. (Aug 2007)

    Thank you, Motive.

“JADE, I know you’re a one-issue kind of gal, but instead of singling out Alveda King for being two-faced about civil rights, I’d worry more about fellow blacks that overwhelmingly are against gay marriage, by a 52-34 margin. President Obama is among them.”

I can’t identify a person who claims to be a civil rights leader? I’m well aware of the statistics otherwise. Y’know, seeing as I’m completely a ‘one issue’ kind of gal, I obviously must know all of the facts about it [and nothing else].

“JADE, you know I love you, but if a cartoon is about boxers or briefs, you’d find a way to relate it to gay rights.”

I’ve made numerous responses to comics without doing that. Though I’m sure I could find a way to do it, with a few flips and dips amd splits through the mental gymnastics high bars… I don’t see how, if it were something I did, it would be any different than some of the Right-wing posters making every comic, regardless of how unrelated, about Obama. But yeah, I totally could if I wanted to. :3

    Guys don’t wear any.

And when we put it on, they complain it takes too much time.
