I think a comment from yesterday makes more sense in light of today’s strip … they should just recreate this incident as a comedy routine.

Are they going to devote much more time to this story arc (which is silly, since Luann’s family owns the Fuse, so she is legally prohibited from winning a prize anyway)? Now that they’ve pretty much established they have no act, can they move on to something else? Isn’t it time for Luann to start her job caring for kids at the Day Camp? And Bernice can spend the rest of the summer automating the RA infraction-reporting system to allow her to report more rules violations even faster.

They’re beginning to look like a pair of zombies…..maybe they should get behind a screen and do a “shadow show” strip tease to The Bolero or even music that is a little less sexy and more humorous. There are plenty of commenters here that could come up with better music ideas than me.

You know, the lines on their cheeks, though purposed to simulate “looking like a ventriloquist’s dummy”, are, at this point, also ironically anything but ‘laugh lines’…

    > “legally”? what law controls talent shows?>Well, statutes against fraud, for starters. Suppose someone had to spend money on putting together an act (buying costumes, music, etc.) in hopes of winning a prize. If a member of the De Groot family won a prize and that person didn’t, they could legally claim that they were cheated and lost money. That is against the law, even if it’s just a talent show.

The meta humor is that every comic strip shares some similarities with a ventriloquist. One person, moving about and putting words into the mouths of others. It’s rare that the dummies know they’re dummies, though.

Remember the Smother’s Brothers gang? They had a similar kind of schtick. One brother was kind of cluless (not) Tommy always saying, “mom always liked you best” to the exasperation of his so-called smarter brother, Dick. Actually interestingly they were about a year apart in age and Tommy was the older brother. Anyway, they were very critical of the war and were probably way to the left of center on many ideas, and did somethings on their TV show on CBS which was not something that a Carol Burnett would do, or Sonny and Cher. Maybe Cher, or at least she probably wanted too. Luann and Bernice are rehearsing a variation of that theme, except being lifelong friends they keep tripping on each other’s lines. That by itself was part of the the Smothers Brothers appeal, that unintentional, intentional tripping all over each other, all the brotherly bickering. These two are so like sisters anyway, so I think that would work. That is LuannFan’s take anyway.

Hey one more cotton-picking thing, and I going to get on with prepping for cooking some cow, pig,and chicken and other meats and things tomorrow and Monday. Who the you know what cares if its a contest or show? This is Luannverse, do people forget? It’s whatever the cartoonist wants it to be. To be that precise totally misses the point. Actually if you want to be precise about the story, actually this is a way to get back to the two main actors in the strip, Luann and her lifelong friend, near sister Bernice. These two obviously love each other as friends and sisters, and as such they bicker, laugh, share things, and what is unusual about that? Most of us have friends and/or siblings we can completely be ourselves with. If not sorry on you. So that is really the story. Everything else just adds to the fun. Relax on that garbage please. I know people won’t them being people (lol). But this is Luannverse I say again, so don’t overthink it.

And no there is nothing that would legally prevent someone related to the owner from winning a talent show. Companies do that to protect themselves from disgruntled winners, but they are not required to exclude family members should they chose. Now if a state has enacted a law, or a municipality, and its not unconstitutional (Chicago had an ordinance against ugly people, until a judge threw it out because what the hell is an ugly person?) stating that this may be a problem, But I think if that was brought before a court it would be drop-kicked into oblivion.

Bernie is cranky. Maybe she just doesn’t like having her lack of any talent noticed. Maybe she should try to develop some, even if not in time for this particular Talent Show. But then she wouldn’t be Bernice….

This has been a disappointing week and I hope these efforts to invent some performance that they could do together comes to an end soon. If one has to invent a talent in order to enter a ‘Talent Show’ then something is really wrong. I hope Bern and Luann come to the realization that they both have very different abilities and talents and that trying to do something together doesn’t exactly bring out the best in either of them. Nor is it a good use of time.

    What am I thinking?

I am thinking that there is more agreement with my posts than with yours. In fact, I can’t remember the last time anyone agreed with something you said.

That is what I am thinking, and I will chalk up the “dummy” remark to an obvious lack of maturity on your part.
