    Writing as a second language — speech being the first — really was the future. It made it possible to pass down information for generations without depending on memory, good listening throughout or even proximity..It is reasonable to think some used to be smarter than we are now because they somehow managed to transmit so much information down through time with only oral means..Most of us nowadays are insulted when someone even suggests we might want to memorize something. (Even though we do by accident, usually.).Also, notice the flexibility, despite poor punctuation and writing and speleng, most understand what we are writing.

    hieroglyphs were used from 3300 b.c. to 400 a.d., quite a long run. It remains to be seen if our Roman alphabet will endure that long
