Wow. When even Lucy is taken aback by one of Linus’s rants, that’s serious!

I think Linus and Lucy exchanged personalities. Or Linus is just learning too much from her. But who could blame him in a situation like that?

In the last frame Lucy appears to be two faced.

It’s interesting that Lucy is entering the scene. Why is that so? Would there be a difference if there was only Linus shouting? What does it mean that Lucy is puzzled?

In my opinion it says something about CB’s feelings. This is a rare moment where he wishes he could be like Lucy, loud, active, self-assured. Usually he is repelled by such behavior. CB is CB because he isn’t and doesn’t want to be like Lucy.

But here his friend Linus is acting like Lucy and Lucy is NOT acting repulsive. The walls around his identity are coming down. He knows that Linus is right, he gives up defending his passiveness, that’s why Lucy enters the scene and is not shown as a bully.

My comment yesterday still stands: Linus had no right to push Charlie Brown into an immediate situation with the Red Haired Girl that was obviously too late to begin with. In that case, Charlie Brown needs support from a friend about what he could not bring himself to do, not screaming judgement.

Charlie Brown has been obsessing over that Little Red-Headed Girl since forever it seems, but has never acted on his feelings in any way. Linus, the emotional shock-absorber of the strip and Charlie’s faithful lieutenant, sees that Charlie has now lost any chance whatsoever to meet her and so Linus has finally “lost it” himself, beyond exasperation at Charlie’s emotional/social paralysis. Hence, the screed and the explosion directed at Lucy, to whom he is generally submissive. This one strip indicates that perhaps Linus has been even more concerned about Charlie Brown’s emotional /social well-being than Charlie himself. It’s actually great to see Linus emote once in awhile. Lucy is so stunned, she doesn’t know what to do. Ordinarily, she’d answer Linus’ impudence with a five-finger sandwich. She must sense the gravity of the situation.

Linus cares so much about his friend, he’s mad when Charlie Brown fails himself.

One of the rare times (I think there’s only 3 or 4 total) where Linus snaps out on Charlie Brown…

Deep in his heart, Linus believes he should be the star of his own strip, and it grinds him to see how Charlie Brown fills the position.

Gets so extremely mad at Charlie Brown he’s able to scare Lucy. Too bad later on that evening she’ll beat him up for it. Off camera, of course.

Linus at least met the little red-haired girl though that might’ve been after she moved back. Charlie Brown was pitching and became paralyzed with fright when he realized she was watching the game. Then Linus led him home to bed, relieved him on the mound, won the game, and got a hug from the excited girl!

The first panel reminded me of the lyrics to this song: Winchester CathedralYou’re bringing me downYou stood and you watched asMy baby left town

You could have done somethingBut you didn’t tryYou didn’t do nothingYou let her walk by

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that galShe wouldn’t have gone far awayIf only you’d started ringing your bell

Winchester CathedralYou’re bringing me downYou stood and you watched asMy baby left town
